Teacher · Retire in 365 days
How a Teacher Retires in 365 Days
31 years teaching in a district outside Social Security — and a law that changed in 2025 means half the advice she'll find online is now wrong, in her favor.
Linda, 59 — married to Bob, a machinist with a full SS record
Episode in production — the written drill below is the full story.
The income
$63k teaching; a state pension around $42k/yr at 60
The savings
$310k saved between them
The outcome
In the episode: the money never runs out
The countdown
12 months out
Pension estimate and survivor-option election reviewed — the irrevocable one. And the retiree health plan priced to 65 as a real line item.
9 months out
The 2025 check: spousal benefits off Bob's record used to be wiped out by her pension offset. The law repealing that changed the math — verify what she's actually owed now.
6 months out
Run the mortality scenarios both directions. Her pension option and his Social Security survivor rules interact — the chart makes the asymmetry visible in one click.
3 months out
The 403(b) sweep: teacher-plan vendor lists are annuity-salesman country. Check the fees and the surrender schedule on the old contract.
Rules that only apply to this career
Teaching outside Social Security
In about 15 states, many teachers don't pay into Social Security — the pension replaces it. That means little or no benefit from their own record, and for decades the spousal benefit was offset too.
The 2025 change (WEP/GPO repeal)
The Social Security Fairness Act (January 2025) repealed the offsets that reduced spousal and survivor benefits for pension-holders. If you were told 'you'll get nothing off your spouse's record' before 2025, re-check.
The twist
The district dangles a two-year retention stipend. The drag test shows the pension bump barely moves the runs-out age — the chart turns a guilt trip into a small decision. She declines.
The verdict
Retire at 60 on schedule. Pension plus the restored spousal benefit plus Bob's Social Security at 67 — the rule that did the most work was a law passed in January 2025.
