Military Retiree · Retire in 365 days
He Retired at 38. Now He's Retiring Again.
The 20-year pension has paid since he was 38, TRICARE erased the health-insurance bridge, and now the SECOND career is ending. The floor was poured twenty years ago.
"Top" — Master Sgt. (ret.) Darnell Weeks, 58 — married to Alicia
Episode in production — the written drill below is the full story.
The income
$88k as an ops manager + a military pension that's paid since 38
The savings
$410k civilian 401k + $130k TSP + VA disability
The outcome
In the episode: the money never runs out — by a wide margin
The countdown
12 months out
Map all four streams: military pension (inflation-adjusted, paying for 20 years already), VA disability (tax-free), the civilian 401k, and the TSP. Most drills build a floor — his was poured at 38.
9 months out
The honest audit: pension plus VA covers 60% of their spending before touching a single account. Everything else is margin.
6 months out
Alicia's timeline is her own — she works to 60 by choice. Per-person retirement dates, per-person plans.
3 months out
TRICARE election at the job's loss-of-coverage event. The bridge that terrifies every civilian episode is a rounding error here.
Rules that only apply to this career
The 20-year pension pays immediately
Retire from active duty at 20 years and the pension starts NOW — at 38, at 42, whenever — inflation-adjusted for life. No other American career does this.
TRICARE deletes the bridge
Military retiree health coverage makes the pre-65 insurance years — the hardest problem in every civilian plan on this site — nearly free. At 65 it pairs with Medicare as TRICARE for Life.
Guard and Reserve are DIFFERENT
A Guard/Reserve retirement is points-based and generally starts paying around age 60, not immediately — a completely different plan shape. That's its own episode.
The twist
A defense contractor offers $110k to un-retire for two years. The chart says he doesn't need it; Alicia says the lake house needs a dock. He takes ONE year, banks all of it, builds the dock. Some twists are victory laps.
The verdict
Second retirement at 59, with dock. For every 25-year-old watching Dad's channel: the 20-year pension is the last guaranteed early-retirement contract in America — and TRICARE is half its value.
